Set to be released next Tuesday, a new book from James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales titled, “Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN,” is an oral history of ESPN that is sure to spill some dirt on the principles and executives of the 4-letter network. From this New York Times article Miller “reveals how an ESPN executive tried to pull the W.N.B.A. off the air in a screaming argument with N.B.A. Commissioner David Stern.” How much detail the book goes into remains to be seen, as does any further mentions of the Women’s National Basketball Association.

A fascinating article on Rick Welts, the president and chief executive of the Phoenix Suns by Dan Barry of the New York Times. “Mr. Welts explained that he wants to pierce the silence that envelops the subject of homosexuality in men’s team sports. He wants to be a mentor to gay people who harbor doubts about a sports career, whether on the court or in the front office. Most of all, he wants to feel whole, authentic.” Welts worked with Valerie Ackerman, the founding WNBA president, in helping to launch the WNBA.

Here is also an interesting take from Charles Barkley in light of the Welts announcement. “First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.”

Also, Will Sheridan, former Villanova athlete reveals he is gay.

“I’m trying to have a voice, and I want that voice to reach as many people as it can,” he said. “I mean, look at me. I’m black. I’m gay. I’m like a quadruple minority, and I feel like a little piece of me resides in everybody.
